Workers at a Northland community trust were reduced to tears after the Ruakaka centre was severely damaged by a suspicious fire.
Firefighters were called to the Bream Bay Community Support Trust in Ruakaka, Takutai Place, about 5.30am yesterday.
It was the second arson attack on a public building in Northland in three days.
Devastated workers, trustees and stunned community members could only stand and watch as a team of 30 volunteer firefighters from Ruakaka, Waipu and Portland dampened down the charred remains of the hall and administration block.
Trustee and centre manager Sue Rudman, who has worked at the centre since it started in 1994, was in tears as she described the trust's role in the community.
She said the New Zealand Refining Company had originally donated the two buildings, which had recently had a $250,000 refurbishment thanks to an ASB trust grant.
The trust originally started as a youth service to give young people in the area something to do.
It currently runs an alternative school for seven students and was a referral service for other agencies including Winz and Plunket.
Weddings were held there along with Maori language courses, and there was a 60-bed venue for functions or visiting sporting teams.
"People use us. We are who they all come to for help," Ms Rudman said.
The latest upgrade featured Maori carvings on the entrance to the hall by master carver Hemi Rihari, who passed away last year.
Another who worked closely with the trust was Rowena Paikea, who said: "All the memories have been lost.
"There were photos of people who have lived, worked and died here."
She was in disbelief.
"It's such an eerie feeling."
Local Baptist minister Simon Currie said the trust acted as a link in the community bringing together numerous agencies.
"There has been a whole lot of time and energy invested in this centre.
"It's a central part of the community ... so this is devastating."
A woman who turned up at the police cordon was shocked at the devastation.
"Doesn't it make you feel sick? I was just there last week at a meeting," she said.
The nearby Ruakaka Recreation Centre was thought to have been broken into as well.
A fire safety investigator was at the scene. A police dog and handler was called and tracked a scent down a nearby road.
Police are calling on anyone who may have seen suspicious activity to come forward.
A call from a Ruakaka shop owner raised the alarm.
Anyone with information can contact Whangarei police on 09 430 4500.
The fire comes after a 12-year-old girl admitted lighting a fire that destroyed a classroom at Kaikohe West School on Monday afternoon.
