UPDATE 3.45pm: Police have confirmed they have taken a wanted man into custody without incident. He was arrested near Tokerau Beach on the Karikari Peninsula.

2.30pm: Armed police have converged on a Far North road and are searching all vehicles passing in and out.

A witness at the scene said police were on Inland Rd, off State Highway 10, the major road on Karikari Peninsula leading to Maitai Bay.

At the intersection with Lake Ohia Rd police armed with M4 rifles had set up a roadblock and were stopping all vehicles and checking the boots of some.

There were five marked police cars at the roadblock, including a police dog and handler.

Armed officers dressed in black and with balaclavas over their faces could be seen on Lake Ohia Rd, which was closed to traffic.

Police at the scene were tight-lipped about their operation but said a statement would be released soon.
