The critically ill man who died after the ambulance he was being transported in crashed in Moerewa yesterday has been named as 66-year-old Sonny Rawhiti Kemp, of Kaeo.
It is not known if the crash was a contributing factor in Mr Kemp's death. The ambulance with three St John staff and a patient onboard crashed into a power pole in the main street of Moerewa between Nisbet St and George St about 6.38am yesterday.
One of the St John staff was injured in the crash but is in a "satisfactory condition" in Whangarei Hospital, a police media statement said.
St John is continuing to support their staff while carrying out a standard internal review, as they would with any adverse incident, the statement said.
