A public vigil is being held this afternoon at Laurie Hall Park in central Whangarei for people to show their compassion towards those killed in the Christchurch mosque shootings.
The vigil, starting at 6pm, is being coordinated by Carol Peters with support from the local Muslim community, community groups, churches, Whangarei District Council and police.
"This is an opportunity for all of us in the communities of Whangarei to come together in the face of this terrible that has impacted on Muslim families right through Aotearoa – and on all of us. This is a chance to show our compassion and honour our common humanity," Peters said.
Prior to the vigil, a peace march will start at 5pm from the Clock Tower at the Town Basin and proceed to Laurie Hall Park.
Another vigil, called Northland Communities Unite, will take place at Horotutu Park on the Paihia waterfront from 4-7pm
