A team of pizza makers from Northland are heading off to the Gold Coast this month in the hope that they will land a slice of success at the Grand Prix of the pizza industry.
The Domino's Whangarei team - Ceri Gill, Michael Edwards, Rose Nicholl and Josh Cahalane - are hoping to become the big cheeses and enjoy a "pizza" the action at the Ultimate Domino's Makecomp championships in Australia on March 11 and 12. The fearless foursome will have to know their Funky Chicken from their Meatlovers, and avoid a crusty performance if they are to wow judges when they compete against seven other teams in the Australasian finals. Each team must be from the same store and have a saucer, first maker, second maker and coach for the intense, live final which is sure to be a spicy combo as teams are being judged on speed and accuracy.
Coach Rose Nicholl is hoping the event will become the topping of their year as she believed the team's success would rise like pizza dough. "It has been a lot of training and practise that has paid off with a trip to the Gold Coast ... Our team have qualified with the fastest time and so our expectations are high, as is the pressure ..."
The final will be held in front of all of the Domino's Conference attendees and will be a knockout competition with two teams competing against each other in rounds until ultimately the final two teams are left to battle it out.
If the Whangarei team wins, Domino's New Zealand general manager Scott Bush has vowed to come and work a shift, along with some of the senior management at head office, so the winning team can party. The team joins Auckland's Forrest Hill, in representing NZ.
