A Kaikohe man charged with wounding with intent could have his charge upgraded following the results of a post-mortem examination.

The man has been charged in relation to the death of another Kaikohe man after an incident in the town on Friday evening.

Christopher Vujcich, 58, died in Bay of Islands Hospital on Saturday morning.

Detective Senior Sergeant Rhys Johnston of the Far North said Mr Vujcich had been involved in an altercation with another man in Kowhai Ave just after 9.30pm on Friday.

A 21-year-old Kaikohe man appeared in the Whangarei District Court on Saturday, charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
