Ian Austin considers himself a very lucky man. He's had "an incredible career as a police officer" and now he is a published author.
His book The Ideas Man is set in New York (Austin's favourite city ) and is the story of David Pearson and his 13-year-old daughter Trisha.
Trisha has a rare condition that makes her captive in her own home. David works all hours to make enough money to get by. He also collects junk and makes useful objects for friend and family. David has some good ideas and is good at solving problems.
Austin says he is a bit of a handyman himself. "I had the idea for this book over 20 years ago but wasn't in the position to write it."
Born in England, Austin was a constable in the Hampshire Police. He was promoted to detective and then spent time as a tactical firearms officer, covert surveillance operative and National Crime Squad trainer.
