"Due to the concerns raised and community opposition to the location of a track by the estuary it was confirmed at this meeting that the cycle track would not follow the estuary. It was also confirmed the Waipu Cycle Group would look at alternative routes. To date this route has not been determined and council feels that this decision should rest with the community."
Wearable arts
Whether to attend the afternoon matinee or the evening Champagne Gala is the difficult choice facing you on August 24. Both shows feature the same programme starting with a 45 minute pre-show reception in the marquee including complimentary nibbles, musical entertainment, and a professional magician. Paparoa Lions will operate a cash bar.
The performance will feature a visual spectacular of all the creations choreographed by Waipu's own Lyn Jordan - then the magician will entertain - before all entrants parade their creations individually, together with commentary from the MC.
At the Champagne Gala evening show there will be complimentary bubbles to add to the glamour, followed by the entire performance of all the Wearable Art creations. The judges' decisions and prize-giving will follow.
Committee members Loraine Rowlands and Penny Goodall (also one of the artistic directors) invite you to the show on Saturday, August 24. The matinee is 1.15pm and Champagne Gala at 7.15pm. Tickets from Skelton's in Paparoa, Tony's in Maungaturoto, Long Flat Bacon in Ruawai, Bammas in Mangawhai, Hammer Hardware in Waipu, The Sewing Centre in Dargaville and Speedy Signs in Whangarei.
Cafe open
For a meal with one of the best restaurant views in the district, try the Links View Cafe at the Waipu Golf Club.
A holiday visit to his mum Gladys at Ruakaka Beach led to chef Mark Rossell and his partner, Ange Paringatai, packing up their Wellington home and two children in 11 days and moving north. Mark did his chef's papers in Sydney 20 years ago and was managing a Kapiti Coast pizza restaurant. Ange was a stay-at-home mum.
They now work together and the cafe is open from 10am to 4pm seven days a week over winter. Private parties can be catered to through the golf club, a monthly quiz night is under way and the cafe has hosted groups celebrating wakes to weddings.
"We make our food fresh daily and find that the ladies really like that while the men like bacon, eggs and lamb's fry", Mark said.
The menu varies from cooked breakfasts to crumbed calamari, beef stroganoff and gluten free and vegetarian options. The only menu item they do not make themselves is their pies. Call in or ring them on 027 8200 425.
Waipu rugby
Team manager Carl Pereira said: "It was a game that would have been great not to play, but sadly, the final game of the round robin didn't go Waipu's way against Otamatea.
"Going on to the celebration at the Waipu senior and under-19 prize giving, you wouldn't have picked it,"
Last Saturday at Waipu, the senior A team played Whangaruru for promotion/ relegation. The final score was 54-10 to Waipu. The team felt a high scoring game was needed to prove they had made the step up to premier rugby.
This happened, with 14 points on the board in 15 minutes and then the patience learned over the past few months started to take effect with the forwards dominating in the set pieces, giving the backs excellent ball.
Outstanding games from Brent Murray, Jake Moffatt , Ben Mathers, Chance Gray , Aaron Russell and Dalton Tapper insured this would be Waipu's day. Full credit is to be given to Whangaruru and their supporters for sticking with the game and not giving up - and for scoring two good tries.
With the season now over, the boys are looking forward to the Northland Sevens this year.
The Waipu Rugby and Squash Club committee thanks all sponsors and supporters for what they feel has been a successful first year back in the premier division.
The 2013 season of representative rugby is about to get under way at Waipu Caledonian Park with the club hosting a pre-season Northland vs Counties game on August 8.
Both squads will have their Super 15 players back from the Chiefs and Blues for this game.
This game is on August 8, with a 5.30pm kick off.
Entry will be way of a gold coin donation.
