There's a growing need in Northland for short term respite care for those looking after family members with brain injuries, and Whangarei-based care support provider TLC4U2 is aiming to fill the gap.
TLC4U2 principal Jonathan Harris said he employs two caregivers qualified and experienced to provide respite care, but says to offer an efficient and flexible service he needs up to 10 caregivers.
"At the moment, some people are being sent to Auckland and Hamilton to give their carers a break, so we're looking to set up a service that meets the needs of brain injury caregivers and their families."
He adds that even sending clients to Auckland or Hamilton can be fraught because generally they can't drive, so family members have to take them. While ACC contributes to costs, that still puts families in a difficult position.
"At the moment, respite care in Northland is very limited but there is a definite need."
