A group of older artists and craftspeople have done that most modern of retail events - set up a pop-up shop in the Whangarei CBD.

Crafts and Art Northland (CAN) members have moved into the former Noel Leeming appliances shop on Cameron St and have set up a display of 'old style' arts and crafts, said CAN representative Colleen Loch.

"We have old style fabric art such as bags and aprons as well as wooden toys, cards and paintings in oil, acrylic and water colours, mainly of local subjects."

Art and craft items for sale are made by CAN members, who also donate some items such as books, plants, jams and preserves.

CAN started in 1974 as a not-for-profit art and craft organisation and is still going strong, with around 60 members.

No strangers to retail innovation, the group set up an outlet shop in the Farmers' walkway in March 2008 which was scheduled to be open for two months. It finally closed in November 2011 before moving into the Strand Arcade.

The pop-up shop will shut its doors on Saturday at 4pm.
