The National Basketball League season ended on a positive note for the Manawatu Jets, who won against the Augusta Mountainairs 108-91 at Arena Manawatu on Saturday. Despite the win, the Jets had a disappointing season, winning just six out of 18 games.
Head Coach Darron Larsen says it was disappointing to finish sixth on the NBL table, as the team had hoped to place in the top four.
"We had two major injuries that put us behind at the beginning of the season. When we recovered from those injuries we played a lot better. We never gave up, but we were in too big of a hole to get out," says Larsen.
The highlights during the season include the victory over the Super City Rangers in Auckland. The Jets bet the Rangers 98-88, who are currently placed fourth on the NBL table. The Manawatu team also won all three matches against the Hawke's Bay Hawks, two of which were away games.
Larsen says the positive note is that the future is bright for the Jets, if the group can be kept together. "You don't get anywhere by bringing new guys in all the time. A lot of the players are young and we have a good chance to develop them, so that in a few years time they could be an elite team."
