The Christchurch City Chorus are top-noters after winning the national women's barbershop competition.
More than 500 women, forming 10 choruses and 25 quartets, took part in the competition held in Christchurch. The winners will compete for the international title in Florida in September.
Wellington's Faultline barbershop chorus won second place. The 55-member chorus from the Hutt Valley and greater Wellington area is part of the Sweet Adelines International chorus which has more than 30,000 members worldwide.
Faultline chorus, whose members are aged from 20 to 70, was founded in 1988 with five members.
Spokeswoman Jo Maxwell says the popularity of barbershop singing has increased in recent years because of the many aspects to the performance, including glitzy costumes, choreography and a wide vocal range.
"It's a really challenging vocal art form," she says. "It is performance art where everything works together to make the final product."
Sweet Adelines were established in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 1945 and are now the world's largest singing organisation for women.
