Kiwi actress Rena Owen is returning to the New Zealand stage for the first time in three years for a role in a New Zealand Festival 2000 play.
Owen, famed for her role as Beth in Once Were Warriors, will play the part of Pearl in Briar Grace-Smith's new play Haruru Mai.
"Being a New Zealander, particularly a Maori, it's important for me personally to be part of this production," says Owen, who decided to turn down jury positions for the Sundance Film Festival and the Santa Barbara Film Festival so she could appear in the play.
Owen's latest film role was in An All American Girl, a story based on the true-life saga of teacher Mary K. Letourneu's love affair with a student. Owen was cast in the role of the student's mother.
She is also scheduled to play a cameo role in the forthcoming American film The Imposter.
