The Auditor-General has been called in to investigate why taxpayer money loaned to the producers of New Zealand Idol has suddenly become a grant.
New Zealand On Air shelled out $450,000 to get the top-rating show going, but is yet to get it back.
ACT's broadcasting spokeswoman Deborah Coddington said there had been some clever accounting to make it look like Idol made no profit, even though it pulled in significant advertising revenue for TVNZ.
