Russell townsfolk are calling for any brave, eccentric or barmy people with Superman or Wonder Woman qualities to take flight from their local wharf.
Challengers will have to build a set of wings and - in Icarus style - launch themselves into the sky and soar over the sea.
The July 7 event has a prize pool of $4500 with awards for the longest flight, best costume and most entertaining performance.
Pania Sigley of Russell said she was keen to help organise something to liven up the town and "Russell a few feathers".
"We thought it would be good to do something during the winter as it can get quite dead and boring," she said.
"So many people have holiday homes in Russell that we hope to draw quite a big crowd. We've had inquiries from Auckland and further afield."
There are rules to the contest - no kites, balloons or paragliders. No motorised assistance. And entrants must be over 15.
There will also be plenty of other entertainment with a beach dig, kayak race, spaghetti-eating competition and a barbecue cook-off.
Local Peter Stuart said the Birdman idea came about over a beer one evening.
"One local had participated in the Queenstown birdman event which is really popular, and we thought it would be great to hold one in Russell.
Businesses have been really supportive and although we're not sure if we'll make any profits, any we do, will go toward a new field for the Russell Sports Club.
"If it is a success we hope we can make it an annual event," he said.
Eager competitor Gary Hooson has already started building his wings.
"I can confirm that materials have been sourced. The only thing I can divulge is that it's made of bamboo and cardboard. I don't want to say too much as I don't want anybody stealing my ideas," he explained.
"I'm excited but getting more nervous as it gets colder. However, I'm very confident I'll win."
