Mother's Day is all about a treat, either for yourself or for your mum. An offering of a wee posy of flowers, a lovely home-made card, and some home-baked goodies can be enough to show appreciation.
The women in my family come from a long line of skilled bakers, both in the home and out. Helping out in the family bakery in the weekends and school holidays taught many a fine skill - the best jam doughnuts, custard squares and savouries in the district were served and also created generations of baked goods appreciators.
Today I have simple recipes, classics that can easily be whipped up then served while having a lovely long chat over a pot of tea. Gems are delicious and bring back fond memories, maybe something to do with the butter sizzling in the hot gem irons - they smell divine while cooking.
Everyone loves a scone, you can get your hands in there, they are so quick to make. Play around with ingredients by adding different spices and flavourings, and remember they don't need to be the size of a small building.
The raspberry biscuits take a little more effort but as they look so pretty and taste delightful, they are well worth it. Your mother will love them.
Chef's tip
If you don't have a heart-shaped cutter, a little patience with the point of a sharp knife will do the trick. Also, topping the scones with a mixture of cinnamon and sugar before baking will result in a yummy, sweet crust.
