Guitar hero
Les Paul, inventor of the solid-body electric guitar, will be honoured with a technology Grammy in February after six decades of contributions to the recording industry. Paul, 85, is credited with inventing multi-track recording, overdubbing and tape echo. The Les Paul guitar, introduced in 1952, is still used by many musicians.
Elton collared
Sir Elton John went on a spending spree yesterday, buying £7500 ($25,700) of ties in a matter of minutes. The singer bought 30 designer ties at a London shop which was raising funds for Unicef.
Bollywood dummy
Indian screen legend Amitabh Bachchan yesterday became the first Bollywood star to be immortalised at Madame Tussaud's. Bachchan, who was at the London waxworks museum to unveil his likeness, was chosen ahead of fellow movie idol Shah Rukh Khan in a poll of film fans.
Pam stands out
There was no room for Rudolph Valentino or Marlene Dietrich as German moviegoers voted for the most erotic stars of all time. Pamela Anderson led the list of women, followed by Salma Hayek and Cameron Diaz. George Clooney was top male in the survey by Cinema magazine.
