Monsters from the hit television documentary series Walking With Dinosaurs are to make a comeback in a BBC1 drama to be shot in New Zealand, and which could also feature Colombo star Peter Falk.
The giant prehistoric creatures, which first became ratings winners in 1999, are to be used in a live action production of The Lost World. The drama, adapted from Arthur Conan Doyle's epic tale, will begin filming later this month, with Bob Hoskins and James Fox in lead roles.
In the drama, a group of British explorers head into remote areas of the Brazilian rainforest in search of the dinosaurs reputed to still roam there.
It is the first time the BBC's drama department has linked up with the documentary side, which made Dinosaurs, for such a project. Falk, who has been associated with Colombo for three decades, is in talks to step into the role of a clergyman.
A BBC spokeswoman said that for the rainforest scenes, production crews and actors would head to New Zealand rather than Brazil because technical back-up was much easier to get in New Zealand and the climate was much milder.
Tim Haines, who produced Walking With Dinosaurs, is co-producing the drama, creating a British television first by combining live period action with the latest digital effects."
