Scrub fire under control

Fire Service crews from around Hawke's Bay battled a scrub fire at Poraiti near Taradale. It was brought under control by about 5pm. Fire services remained on-site to make sure it was put out properly and there were no more flare-ups. Three helicopters using monsoon buckets helped firefighters on the ground to subdue the flames. The Police National Dive Squad recovered the body of a 16 year-old male international student from the Waitangi Lagoon at the mouth of the Ngaruroro River, Awatoto, Napier. He had been swimming there with a companion on Saturday.

Hawke's Bay Coastguard, Fire Service, police, a motorboat, and IRBs (inflatable rescue boats normally operated by surf life saving clubs) searched for a missing 16 year-old male international student who had been swimming in the Waitangi Lagoon at the mouth of the Ngaruroro River, Awatoto, Napier.
