Volleyball is a new thing at Lindisfarne College this year. But you wouldn't guess it judging by the way the Hastings private boarding school students are performing in the Hawke's Bay Junior Interschool Volleyball Championships.
Coach and teacher Dave Rennie Rennie today said the school had fielded five junior and senior teams this year.
"The junior kids playing last night were playing the sport for the first time," Rennie said.
He said the response to the foundation sport was overwhelming and the school had no problems forming eight-member teams.
Lindisfarne registered a 90-66 victory over Napier Boys' High School in the division two competition at the Pettigrew-Green Arena, in Taradale, last night.
Year 9 student Thomas Yule was the stand-out player for Lindisfarne with his good jumping and blocking skills.
"Thomas combined very well with his setter, Ben Wynn-Lewis, to spearhead our victory," Rennie said.
Thomas only recently completed his module on volleyball during the school's physical education programme.
Rennie said that earlier this year the Lindisfarne senior boys' team had finished in third position, behind Napier Boys' High, who finished first and second.
