First five-eighth Lincoln McClutchie and fullback Danny Toala were the heroes as Hastings Boys' High School's 1st XV rugby team won the Super 8 title for the first time since 2004 today.
McClutchie scored two cracker tries and Toala succeeded with all six of his attempts at goal, three penalties and three conversions, in difficult conditions during their 30-8 win against Hamilton Boys' High School. Hastings completed an unbeaten run in Super 8 play this season as well as another six games.
This was Hamilton's second Super 8 loss of the season and they haven't won in Hastings since 2010.
Hastings head coach Mark Ozich, who is in his first season with the team, was rapt with the victory.
"These boys had never been in this final before. They handled the pressure and delivered."
Hamilton head coach Nigel Hotham agreed his troops didn't play the territory game enough and this was a tribute to the tenacious defence produced by the hosts.
"All going well we will meet again in the national secondary schools top four competition and we will see what happens there."
Scorers:
Hastings Boys' High School 30 (Lincoln McClutchie 2, Jeriah Mua tries; Danny Toala 3 pens, 3 cons), Hamilton Boys' High School 8 (Joe Vaka try; Rameka Poihipi pen). HT: 13-5.
