If racing in the first event of the Hawke's Bay Multisports Club's winter calendar is an indication, it's going to be a hot build-up to the world triathlon championships in Auckland in October.
It might be called the Friendly Dental VLK (Very Low Key) Series, but Luke Osborne was nothing but competitive in the Revolution Bikes Duathlon (4.5km run/22km cycle/4.5km run) on Sunday.
Racing in the open grade, the 28-year-old led by a minute after the first run, and extended that lead on the cycle and second run to come home almost six minutes ahead of his nearest opposition.
His time of one hour, seven minutes and 42 seconds was equal to the second fastest time ever recorded in this event.
Professional triathlete Guy Crawford is the only man to go faster - 1:07:02.
