Many Hawke's Bay residents have been struggling to cope with chlorinated water but there is a cost-effective solution that will remove chlorine and sediment and that's a Puretec water filter.
Issues people often mention in relation to chlorination are the horrible taste of tap water, the off-putting smell, the fact it stains taps and reactions such as skin allergies. Some report that flowers and vegetables aren't growing well due to the water and some say that it's killed their goldfish. "People are struggling as we're not used to that in Hawke's Bay," General Manager of AW Holder, Kirsty Edwards says.
The company has had a huge increase in business as a consequence of water chlorination. Replacing water cylinders because they have blown is one result of pipes being affected by chlorine, she says. "It's quite a harsh chemical." Chlorine basically cleans, opening up puncture holes which leads to leaking and major trouble like blown water cylinders. Stripping chlorine out of your water before it enters the house is relatively easy and right now AW Holder has several special offers on Purtec water filter systems.
A filter for the whole house can be fitted where water enters your house. It could be installed inside or out, is relatively unobtrusive plus it has no moving parts, no chemicals and requires no power. The water actually runs through two cartridges. The first takes out sediment and grit and the second removes chlorine and odour. A filter will last about 12 months. It's a reasonably simple and quick process to install, Kirsty says.
There's another smaller system suitable for kitchens or offices which is a DIY filter which fits on any mixer tap. Changing the filter is just like changing a light bulb. For those concerned about water quality in the garden there are also filters for outside taps and garden hoses.
