Rebecca Stevenson Michael and Jill Davies are now the proud owners of their own red corvette - but this model couldn't be described as little.
The retired Taradale couple took delivery of a classic 1974 Corvette Stingray yesterday, the gleaming fire-engine red muscle-car hand-delivered by Surf Life Saving Hawke's Bay's Naomi Fergusson.
"Oh, gosh, it's a little beauty, it certainly is," Mrs Davies said, checking out the good-looking American car in the driveway.
Dr Davies was equally in awe.
"Oh heavens, what happens here?" he asked, trying to open the driver's door. It's on the left-hand side.
The pair won the car after Dr Davies bought a raffle ticket for a Surf Life Saving New Zealand fundraiser.
Along with the Stingray the couple won a trip to the US to take in the sights on the famed Route 66.
"It was rather a shock," Dr Davies said.
"It was on Good Friday, in the evening, when I got the telephone call and I couldn't think what to do about it.
The ticket was really just a donation."
The delivery didn't quite go as planned, Dr Davies thinking it was coming today, but it was still in time for Mrs Davies' 80th birthday celebration this weekend.
Family from around the country are descending on Hawke's Bay for the event and there's no doubt a spin in the old classic will form part of the celebration.
Its a '74 Targa-top four-speed manual with medium saddle leather. It has electric windows, power steering and comes on original Rallye wheels.
Ms Fergusson had a few nervous moments on her way to the Davies' home, unused to the left-hand drive.
"People definitely look at you when you are in it," she said.
The Surf Life Saving Hawke's Bay manager said it was great to see a Hawke's Bay winner be rewarded for supporting the organisation over many years.
"The generosity Dr Davies has shown us over the years is just amazing. We depend on the support of people like Dr Davies."
What's up, doc? A Stingray!
