A retired Napier couple have been all-but confined to their beachfront home for a couple of days after a vehicle which was being sought by police crashed into their garage door.
The roller door of John and Heather Milne's garage, joined to their Marine Pde home, was damaged in the incident on Sunday afternoon and has since been unable to be opened, with their own car still parked inside.
"These things always seem to happen at weekends," said Mr Milne, who was watching tennis on Tv when the crash happened — a "loud bang right behind me", 4-5 metres from where he was sitting.
It was preceded by the sound of a siren and when he looked outside he saw the car, which had had five occupants. An unmarked police car and an officer were also in the driveway, joined by other police staff soon afterwards.
Mr Milne estimated the occupants of the car, which he understood had been reported missing by a family member of one of the occupants, were aged in their early to mid-20s.
