Wednesday Write In: Corridor of native trees

I read Mark Story's editorial regarding native trees and birds, in Monday's paper, with much interest.

I agree with him whole-heartedly! I would like to see the use of native trees taken a lot further than just around the inner city.

Many native birds don't fly far at any one time, fantails, warblers and many others, tend to flit from tree to tree.

A forward looking council would aim to produce corridors of natives leading into the city.

There are significant numbers of native birds in Havelock North and growing populations in Frimley and Pakowhai Parks.

Sympathetic corridor plantings could bring native birds into town.

Hamilton City has done a brilliant job of planting stream banks, motorways and main roads in natives, which link areas of the city. There are lists of native bird-friendly trees and plants that are freely available. It would not take much effort by planners to have a positive effect.

Put my name down to donate a tree or two, I am sure others would chip in too!
