The latest Niwa forecast for the rest of the Hawke's Bay summer should have concert promoters and concert-goers feeling pretty comfortable ... sort of.
For while the continuing La Nina weather system means average to above-average temperatures for the big concert months, the easterly-influenced weather patterns could mean "normal to above-normal" rain on the North Island's eastern seaboard. Overall, however, the next three months do not appear to have anything meteorologically extraordinary about them, although eastern areas are likely to be in the firing line if rain is in the air.
The La Nina system results in more easterly flows onto the country. The dates for the four big alfresco concerts in the Bay have a good track record if 2010's weather is taken into account.
JANUARY 29: Joe Cocker, Church Road: The weather on January 29 last year was 20C, mainly fine with high cloud and a slight chance of light showers.
FEBRUARY 12: Sting, Mission Estate: February 12 last year was 28C, sunny and clear.
FEBRUARY 26: Crowded House, Church Road: February 26 last year was 20C with high cloud.
MARCH 19: Lionel Ritchie, Church Road: March 19 last year was 22C, sunny and clear.
Only the Sting concert has sold out at this stage.
