Disabled Hawke's Bay children are finding autonomy, independence and mobility thanks to the selfless efforts of Tutira couple Katy Wylam and Mark Kenah.
They have launched Sailability in Hawke's Bay and operate out of the Napier Sailing Club in Ahuriri.
"The aim of Sailability is to make sailing accessible to people with
disabilities," Miss Wylam said.
"The disability may be as simple as a child with severe asthma or as severe as a quadriplegic."
Every weekend, the engaged couple help young people find an independence and mobility many had only dreamed of.
They have been fundraising for two years and with the help of multi-national insurance firm AXA have been able to buy two sailing dinghies and a support boat for the trust.
Sailability is international but each branch runs its own affairs, Miss Wylam said.
"We had to start from scratch, but Napier Sailing Club has just been fantastic."
Word of the opportunity spread fast and two more boats will be needed soon to cope with the demand.
"We work mainly through CSS and Sport Hawke's Bay but people have found out about us mainly through word of mouth."
