The owner of a Hawke's Bay cat that left home on top of a ute is hoping the missing Meeanee moggie makes it home soon.

Two-year-old Mya was last seen leaving owner Bridget Brannigan's home in Meeanee, about 7km south of Napier, atop of a ute, driven by Brannigan's oblivious daughter.

The vehicle headed towards Taradale, about 5km away.

Mya's departure was captured on security camera, and Brannigan is hopeful the family pet has alighted not too far from home, and is lost, but safe and will show up soon.

Brannigan describes Mya as a "typical Burmese" - the breed is renowned for getting in and on vehicles.

"My dad has brought her back to Awatoto twice.

"It doesn't faze her getting in vehicles and going for a ride."

Brannigan realised something was afoot when Mya did not return home on Monday night.

"She is usually in and out. But it's not like her to not be in at night."

After searching the area she decided to check the family's security cameras, where Mya was spotted on the ute on Monday afternoon about 12.45pm.

Brannigan said it's not the first time Mya had gone for a joy ride, though it was the first time she had been on the roof.

Brannigan has walked the 5km route between Meeanee and Taradale but there's no sign of Mya yet.

"Either she's fallen off or maybe jumped off at the stop sign at Meeanee.

Brannigan hoped that if Mya was still on the roof while driving through the township someone might have seen her and her distinctive red collar.
