A myriad of events are taking place around the region today as people celebrate Waitangi Day.
An historical re-enactment and hikoi, waka rides, sports competitions, stalls, food and family entertainment will all be part of the day's offerings.
This morning a group set off on a hikoi from the celestial compass to Clive's Farndon Park, where they were greeted by a pageant on the river re-enacting the arrival of European migrants escorted by tangata whenua.
Hundreds are already enjoying what's on offer at the Waitangi Family Festival, with free entertainment with mini-cars, merry-go-rounds, bouncy castles and waka rides, as well as a "superb" line-up of local musicians, and stalls at the park until 4pm.
The gates have also opened at Hawke's Bay Regional Sports Park, where Waitangi Day Family Celebrations festivities will run until 4pm.
