Villa Maria, which recently announced plans for a multi-million dollar winery beside its Gimblett Gravels Te Awa Winery, has bought 41 ha from nearby Pask Winery.

The property contains bare land and vineyard - a vineyard that in the past supplied grapes to Villa Maria that were surplus to Pask's needs.

Villa Maria owner and founder Sir George Fistonich said opportunities to buy Gimblett Gravels land were very rare.

"There is fierce competition to purchase more vineyards in this very limited premium wine area," he said.

"We're seeing strong growth in demand for red wines particularly in Asia, so securing our grape supply is crucial to meeting our customer requirements. The Gimblett Gravels is a very unique area renowned for making some of the country's best wines."

He said it secured Villa Maria's position as the largest landholder in the 800ha Gimblett Gravels with the new purchase giving ownership of the designated district.

Chris Pask was the first person to plant vines on the Gimblett Gravels, the former riverbed of the Ngaruroro River. Villa Maria's new winery will mean grapes will no longer be trucked to Auckland for processing and supply support to the company's Esk Valley, Vidal and Te Awa wineries in Hawke's Bay.
