A man is recovering in hospital after being left bloodied and barely conscious on the side of the road during a daytime attack in Napier, as police continue to appeal for witnesses and a key piece of evidence.
A man was beaten and suffered serious facial injuries on Wednesday about 3pm during an alleged attack on Latham St in Napier, opposite Bay City Gym.
Police were still looking for the offender on Thursday who has been described as being in his mid-20s, of slim build, with short hair.
“He was wearing dark clothing and, after the attack, he left the area on a motorbike,” Detective Todd Lee said.
“Police are also seeking the motorbike helmet worn by the alleged attacker, which was taken from him by a concerned onlooker, in an attempt to prevent him from leaving.”
Police want to hear from any witnesses to the “vicious assault” particularly those who may have CCTV. Police were still seeking the helmet as at Thursday.
The victim, a man in his 20s, was in a stable condition in hospital on Thursday, after initially being taken to hospital with what was believed to be critical injuries.
Bay City Gym staff member and trainer Calvyn Pike didn’t see the incident but joined a small group of people helping the man before emergency services arrived, offering water and first aid supplies.
“One of our members had just walked out the door and came back in and said, ‘something is happening across the road’.”
He said the victim was bloodied and was “laying on the ground then sort of came up to sitting on the ground and leaning against the fence” on the sidewalk, on the opposite side of the road to the gym.
“He was coughing up blood and was conscious, but was not really aware of anything happening around him,” he said.
“One side of his face was totally swollen.”
Pike said the man was not a member of the gym, and this was the first serious assault he had heard of in the area.

Stabbing incident
Police were also called to a stabbing on Wai Whatu Street in Meeanee, Napier about 8.40pm on Wednesday that left the victim with “critical injuries”.
Initial enquiries indicated the incident was family harm-related, the spokeswoman said.
The man was transported to Hawke’s Bay Hospital, where he remained in a stable condition on Thursday morning.
“Inquiries are ongoing to locate two people believed to have been involved.”
