The latest stage of the Hastings St upgrade in Napier is close to wrapping up and for one retailer, jeweller David McClurg, there is one thing which has changed in more than 60 years.
"No ugly parking meters," Mr McClurg said as he took in the fresh new landscape which has seen the pavements widened and new smooth road seal laid.
Photographs he has of the family business going back to just after the 1931 earthquake show modest footpaths which are clear of meters.
As part of the latest stage, the meters were taken out and have been replaced by a centrally placed parking ticket issuing machine.
"Much better," Mr McClurg said.
