An elderly man who lost control of his car while travelling along Havelock Rd on Wednesday has died at Hawke's Bay Hospital.

The 74-year-old had been travelling towards Hastings about 11.20am when police believe he lost consciousness, struck a traffic island and came to rest with the rear of the vehicle on a pedestrian barrier, just before the intersection with St Georges Rd.

He had been driving alone and did not receive any injuries from the crash itself, Police Sergeant Paul Ormerod said.

Chest compressions were administered at the scene and the man was taken to hospital by St John Ambulance where he died overnight on Thursday.

"He died as a result of issues not related to the car crash," Mr Ormerod said. "We are not investigating it any longer."
