A teenager is in a critical condition at Hawke's Bay Hospital after allegedly stabbing himself and assaulting an elderly female family member.
Emergency services were called to Grays Rd, Hastings this morning after the 18-year-old was seen standing naked in the street just after 7.30am.
A short time later an off-duty policeman drove past - by the time he turned his car around the nude teen had rushed back inside.
The officer found him lying on the floor with stab wounds to his chest. He also allegedly assaulted an elderly female relative in her 70s.
St John ambulance took both to Hawke's Bay Hospital.
Heretaunga territory manager Brendon Hutchinson said the male was in a critical condition with a "central stab wound" while a female patient was stable with a head injury.
At about 7.45am numerous patrol cars sped to the scene.
A section surrounding the address on Grays Rd, remains cordoned off as police continue their investigation.
No other details were available.
