A 15-year-old who stole a $70,000 truck and trailer and took it on a joyride fronted up to Hastings Youth Court yesterday.
A forklift was left damaged and bogged in mud and the truck and trailer unit driven through a security fence during the break-in at the McCain's food processing plant.
A community patrol and police tailed the truck and trailer in a low-speed pursuit before the 15-year-old driver stopped in Flaxmere.
The teenager faced eight charges arising from the break-in on July 14. He did not deny charges of burglary, unlawfully taking heavy truck and trailer units, stealing a truck and trailer, and driving while forbidden. But he entered no plea on two charges of wilful damage relating to the wrecked security fence and damaged truck and trailers.
Judge Robert Wolff remanded the boy in custody to reappear in the Levin Youth Court on 13 August.
The teenager's 13-year-old accomplice was too young to be charged and was referred to Youth Aid.
