A pedestrian walking down Railway Road was struck by two cars and killed last night.
The 31-year-old man was walking down the road near Pakipaki when he was hit by the first car travelling south along Railway Road at about 8.15pm.
Moments later a second car, also driving south, struck the man.
An ambulance was called but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
He was wearing dark clothing.
Railway Road between Paikipaki Road and Longlands Road was still closed this morning as serious crash investigators assessed the scene.
At the scene this morning Sergeant Cory Ubels said he did not know where or why the man was on the road. "All we know is that he was hit by two vehicles."
Mr Ubels said pedestrians must take some responsibility by wearing visible clothes and keeping right off the road. He said drivers also needed to be aware that it was often warm in Hawke's Bay at night and people did walk.
"Drivers need to have their headlights on full if they're in front to increase visibility and they need to take more care."
Hastings District Councillor Norm Speers said he passed the man at about 7.50pm last night when he was driving home from a council meeting.
"It was still daylight and he was wearing dark clothing. He was about 1km further back towards Longlands Road."
Council roading engineers and police were this morning testing the braking suitability of the road surface.
The man's body was being taken to Palmerston North today for a post-mortem.
Senior Sergeant Stu Fleming said police were still trying to contact the dead man's family.
Mr Fleming appealed to anybody who saw the man walking between Pakipaki and Hastings last night to contact Hastings police.
