Kmart Hastings mixed the old with the new as they rang in the Christmas season yesterday at the launch of the annual Kmart Wishing Tree appeal.
For the 21st time, the appeal will collect presents for less fortunate families to be distributed by the Salvation Army.
But for the first time, Kmart customers will also be able to buy a bauble from the tree to make a financial contribution to the work of the Salvation Army.
"It's Christmas, it's about spreading the goodwill and the joy ... we don't stop giving if there still stuff left to give," said Salvation Army Major Bruce Aldersley.
Last year 1200 presents were collected.
