Douglas Mills moved from London to New Zealand nine years ago. On Wednesday, he celebrated becoming a New Zealand citizen at a Napier citizenship ceremony at MTG. He spoke to Hawke's Bay Today about his experiences as an immigrant.
How did you learn about New Zealand, and what did youhear about it?
I first heard about New Zealand from my friends over in London. I then met my now wife when she was over in London on her OE and I came over with her.
I loved every minute of it, there's not been any challenges. I acclimatised well. I think it's a fairly symbiotic relationship, UK and New Zealand, so it's all right.
I think you guys know plenty about the UK ... it's great, it's smoky, small, compact, busy.
Has the March 15 terror attack changed anything for you in NZ?
Not about New Zealand. I think it's reaffirmed my belief that we are strong and supportive. I had a similar feeling with the Christchurch earthquakes, everybody is your neighbour and we all drop everything to help our neighbours.
