The New Trends duo of Justin Pitt and Ben Shuker will record a song for the Play It Strange Trust's CD due for release next February.
The duo, from Taradale High School, received a huge surprise on Saturday, said Pitt, when they went to the inaugural Play It Strange National Secondary Schools' Songwriting Competition awards at Baradene College in Auckland.
"We knew we were in the top 10, then they announced the top five and we were second. And Michael Murphy (NZ Idol) sang our song," said Pitt.
Play It Strange founder and former Split Enz member Mike Chunn has suggested using the Finn brothers' studio in Auckland to record Five Minutes With You, described by Pitt as an upbeat love song.
"I didn't realise how much he (Chunn) was doing for New Zealand music. It was so awesome," he said.
He saw a television ad about the competition, and since they happened to be recording that particular song, written around the time of the CokeSmokefreeRockquest regional final, at that time, they decided to give the competition a go.
