A truck driver who walked away from dramatic truck crash that closed State Highway 2 in Takapau for seven hours was fortunate there was no oncoming traffic at the time, police say.
The road alongside the Central Hawke's Bay town was closed after the crash from 3.55am on Tuesday to 11am, as tow truck drivers, police and firefighters helped right it safely.
Police at the scene said the south-bound truck appeared to have veered left off the road onto the grass verge, spun 180 degrees and tipped.
It ending up facing north, with the truck on its side partially in a paddock and the trailer unit upright but blocking the northbound lane.
Conditions at the time of the crash were wet and windy.
