"The flow on benefits from Jetstar's arrival will also support jobs in the tourism and hospitality sector due to an increased number of visitors coming to the Bay, coupled with Jetstar pilots and cabin crew overnighting in the Bay on a daily basis.
"We are also hoping there will be aircraft servicing opportunities for Flight Care Ltd."
Mr Story said in addition to these advantages, competition between the airlines will result in lower, more affordable airfares and so more people will fly.
"The prospect of a competitive market and choice for travellers is very exciting. We are delighted that Jetstar has confirmed it will fly in and out of Hawke's Bay," he said.
"This will drive growth in passenger numbers and visitors to the airport."
Beyond the immediate affects that the announcement has, Mr Story says Jetstar offers exciting opportunities for our region.
"As one example, we're all aware of house prices in Auckland," he said.
"The airfares released to the market today may have many Aucklanders considering the option of living in Hawke's Bay to enjoy our wonderful lifestyle while commuting to Auckland on a weekly basis for work.
"As another example, lower airfares put Hawke's Bay within greater reach for weekend breaks or holidays and this has the potential to substantially grow our inbound tourism.
"Lower fares will make it easier for business people to visit Hawke's Bay and perhaps bring their teams in for meetings and to take advantage of the many opportunities we have for leisure.
"As a member of the Qantas Group, Jetstar will also create the opportunity for Hawke's Bay travellers to connect globally through the One World Alliance."
The chief executive said on the other side of the coin, the region had much to offer the airline.
"We were confident that Jetstar would consider Hawke's Bay favourably as our catchment includes two cities - Napier and Hastings - together with the vibrant rural communities of Wairoa and Central Hawke's Bay."
