Police are responding to surface flooding in northern Hawke's Bay following heavy rain this long weekend.

A police spokesperson said they were called to surface flooding at the intersection of State Highway 2 and Tangoio Settlement Rd at 8.30am.

The flooding had reduced traffic flow to one lane and the lower part of a nearby cemetery was underwater.

Higgins contractors were at the scene, where it was thought a drain had been blocked.
