The Tamatea Pak'nSave supermarket is set to get more than just a makeover - it is going to be replaced with a larger shopping complex which will also be the heart of a planned new retail hub.
"The existing Pak'nSave has served the local community well for many years," FoodstuffsNorth Island general manager of property development Angela Bull said.
The supermarket has stood on the Leicester Ave corner site for more than 30 years.
"It is time for a new store," Ms Bull said. "We have taken the opportunity to design a store which has plenty of natural light, wider aisles and a spacious retail environment to provide a lighter, brighter and modern Pak'nSave for our customers to shop at."
She said the company wanted to invest in the Tamatea community and was working with local teams to complete project.
Mackersey Construction will be undertaking the build.
Given the age and constraints of the present supermarket Ms Bull said locals using it had been "very patient" and Foodstuffs was delighted to work on creating something new.
Construction of the 5500sq m supermarket, which will have 327 carparks, will not mean Tamatea will be without a supermarket until its planned opening date of late 2016. The current store will remain open while the new one is built beside it. Construction will not infringe on present car parking.
