Crowds of competitiors enjoyed near-perfect conditions as they took part in the IronMaori Half Ironman held at Pandora Pond in Napier this morning.
A large crowd cheered participants of all shapes and sizes as they tackled the 2km-swim, 90km-cycle and 21.1km run, either in teams or individually. A unique feature of the team event in IronMaori is that the swimming cycling and running legs all get underway at set times, reducing congestion on the course.
With the sun shining, competitiors were encouraged by the large crowd. Among the throngs was Te Ururoa Flavell, the Maori Development Minister and Maori Party co-leader, who was competing for the fourth time.
"It is an inspirational Maori event which encourages everyone, particularly our people to give it a go," he said.
