Stabbing accused has hospital bed hearing

The Latvian national who is facing charges relating to a stabbing incident on Saturday night has been remanded in custody until March 15.

Police had initially said the 23-year-old would appear in court this week, but they confirmed he had a bedside hearing yesterday, as he remained in hospital following the incident.

Leo Lafferty was assigned to be counsel for the man who has been charged with two counts of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. The maximum penalty for this type of charge is 14 years' imprisonment.

The charges relate to an alleged stabbing incident at 8.30pm on Saturday night at a Flaxmere address. The man also received injuries.

Two women were taken to hospital with injuries. They had both since been discharged.

The man is also charged with ill-treating an animal under the Animal Welfare Act 1999. The charge relates to the stabbing of a dog. The penalty for this is six months' imprisonment or a fine of $25,000.

The condition of the dog was not yet known but it is believed to have been returned to its owners.

Neighbours had to spend the night elsewhere because their driveway had been turned into a crime scene, because of the blood from the injured women.
