A Hastings man, stabbed in the head and neck, fled a Camberley house after the attack left him in a critical condition.

Detective Sergeant Brent Greville told Hawke's Bay Today yesterday, police were conducting a scene examination at a Kotuku St home, where a 39-year-old man had been stabbed "a few times" to the head and neck on Sunday afternoon.

Police said the stabbing victim managed to make his way to a Raureka house in Hastings about 4.45pm, before being taken to Hawke's Bay Hospital, where police began conducting inquires.

Mr Greville said police were still looking for the weapon used in the assault but had a person in custody.

Police said the alleged offender was arrested a short time later at a Flaxmere house. A 28-year-old man appeared in the Hastings District Court yesterday on a charge of assault.

He was granted interim name suppression and remanded in custody until his next hearing in August.

A Hawke's Bay Hospital spokeswoman said the victim was now in a stable condition. Last night, police inquiries into the incident were continuing.
