Pasifika students from throughout Hawke's Bay spoke in Samoan, Tongan, Kiribati and English for the Spacifically Pacific Speech Competition this week.

Students aged from Year 7 to Year 13 spoke on a range of topics including Are my dreams the same as my parents, Being a Pacific Island youth in a digital age, Reaching for the stars, not the bars and Living in a fast food world on a taro diet.

Event organiser Geraldine Maere said 19 students participated and there was an even split between English and Pacific languages chosen.

Judges were looking for good topic development, originality, presentation techniques, traditional and innovative language techniques, stance, gesture and the X-factor.

Speeches were to be no longer than five minutes.
