Watch out for Complexity - a solo violin recital presented by talented Napier musician Gretchen Anderson in Ormond Chapel, 55 Chaucer Rd, Napier at 7.30pm on Wednesday, July 1.
"Solo violin music is complex harmonically and technically and this makes it particularly interesting and rewarding to practice, perform and to hear," Anderson says.
Complexity will be the fourth solo violin recital that Anderson has presented since her return to Napier. She studied violin with Napier teacher Winifred Bickerstaff, then at the University of Canterbury, with further study and freelance work in Melbourne. Now she teaches violin, plays regularly in the Hawke's Bay Orchestra and The Bold Deceivers - an Irish band.
The programme for the coming recital will include Paganini's 24th Caprice, Sonata No 5 by Ysaye, Fantasies No 8 and 11 by Telemann, Atsinganos by New Zealand composer Helen Bowater, and a world premiere of a piece by Hungarian composer Georg Aranyi-Aschner.
"It's a bit of a European tour through music history with the Aranyi-Aschner composition inspired by Greek gypsy music," Anderson says. "I think it is important to play works by living Australasian composers and give our musical heritage a voice." -Door sales $18/10.
