He also scored the equaliser for the hosts with a penalty from the spot in the 40th minute, which he put into the bottom-left of the net after forward Bjorn Christensen was brought down in the box.
While happy with his own contribution against a team which included several of his Wellington Olympic teammates from winter's Central League competition, 22-year-old Taye was quick to praise the entire United side.
"Defensively we were sound as a team and it was good to get at least one competition point."
However, he agreed more work needs to be done in the scoring department. Although unbeaten, Hawke's Bay United have only scored two goals in their three outings to date.
"We need to take care of things better in the final third. It will come ... it's just a matter of time and then we will get our confidence up. We've been working hard towards achieving that goal."
Far too often, slick construction work in the first two-thirds was let down by poor finishing. However, the fact Hawke's Bay United had four shots on goal, the same number as Team Wellington and restricted the visitors - who had scored nine goals in their previous three outings - to one will give the Brett Angell-coached Bay team plenty of confidence when they take on unbeaten Eastern Suburbs in Auckland this Sunday.
"The boys gave me everything they could. They are an OFC team with some top names whereas we have a lot of first-timers at National League level who are doing themselves proud," Angell said.
"We made some poor decisions in the attacking third and it was a shame we didn't end up with three competition points. But in saying that I thought we dominated the second half."
Angell was right. His troops prevailed in all aspects of play during the second spell, having three shots on goal - two more than Team Wellington.
He agreed Team Wellington's 10th-minute goal by captain and defender Justin Gulley after a classy cross from former Hawke's Bay United player Nathanael Hailemariam was a soft one. His troops played with more composure in the second spell than in the first, when it took them 21 minutes to have their first shot on goal.
Along with Taye, fellow midfielders Gavin Hoy and Adam Thurston were full of authority for Hawke's Bay United. Captain Bill Robertson, who played for Team Wellington during the past three seasons, marshalled the hosts' defensive systems well.
Liam Hayes was creative and full of enthusiasm when he took the field for the hosts as a second-half substitute. With three pre-season games and three competition games under their belts it is time for Hawke's Bay United to start capitalising more on their scoring opportunities.
Once again Angell had plenty of advice for referee John Rowbury, the bulk of it warranted, and this was just as entertaining as the positive brand of footy his lads produced.
Rowbury was consistent with his allocation of yellow cards. He set the boundaries early and stuck to them.
On Saturday Hawke's Bay United's National Youth League team scored a 3-2 win against their Team Wellington counterparts at Bluewater Stadium.
